Update #02: Variables, Resources, and Tools 🛠
Learn about some great design tools/resources and SASS variables.
Hey there 👋,
This is BuildFaster's 2nd issue and I've gotten some awesome feedback on how I can improve my content. If you have advice for something related to my newsletter, feel free to send me an email at brayden45.dev@gmail.com
Now with this taken care of, let's get into it!
Awesome inspiration resources 🎨
Every time I am making a new HTML theme for BuildFaster, I look for inspiration online. The list below are just some of the websites/resources I look at for inspiration.
Now I'll talk to you about each website from the list above and why I love using it.
Dribbble
Dribbble is one of my personal favorite resources because of how diverse designs are shown on it are. You can get inspiration from anything like web design to branding.
It's also pretty great because you post your own designs to show the Dribbble community. From there people can hire you, buy your goods, or comment and leave a like. 💗
Of course, the main reason why I go on Dribbble is for the website designs. The title of Dribbble is literally "Discover the world's top designers & creatives" and that is so true. Every time I scroll through the web design page, I get a new idea. This is very helpful for me when I am trying to come up with a new theme idea for BuildFaster.
Collect-UI
CollectUI is also another great place where I get inspiration. This one however is oriented around web design. On the sidebar of the website, there are 150+ categories to select from. My favorites to look at are the 404 pages and the Landing Pages.
Just like Dribbble, you submit your own designs to CollectUI so more designers will be able to see your work.
Pages.xyz
Out of all the design inspiration sites I've used, Pages.xyz is by far the most unique. The title, "Hall of Fame" pretty much speaks for itself. The screenshots show the full view of the landing page. There are some great real-world examples of landing page designs on Pages.
One of the featured websites (lewagon.com) actually inspired the design for my most popular theme: Lightning Blue.
How to use variables in SASS 👨💻
All of my HTML themes on BuildFaster use code called "SASS Variables". SASS is a prepocesser for CSS that makes designing much faster and easier.
With variables in SASS, you can set a value to a variable and reuse that same key all over your code. This is very helpful because let's say you need to change the font to "Sans Serif" all over your site. Instead of typing "Sans Serif" into each font rule, you can just change the variable for the main font of your site.
One of the most common uses for variables in BuildFaster's themes are for changing the accent colors.
For example, the Half-Half theme's accent color is purple.
Wait, you're not a fan of the color purple? 🟪
No problem 😄. Just change the variables to any color you want. Make it your own.
And now, what you've all been waiting for...
It is...
The new SimplyApp theme!
The SimplyApp HTML theme is a great way to showcase you app idea. It has a nice simple yet modern layout. And just like how you learned about using SASS variables a bit ago, you can change the blue accent to whatever you like.
It will only be minutes until you are finished making this theme your own. I make sure that all of BuildFaster's themes are easy-to-edit. That's what makes BuildFaster's themes so great. 😄
